Timelapse, an ongoing passion.  I took my first ever timelapse clip back in mid 2015.  Since then it’s been a bit of an addiction, and one big learning curve.  Being a design engineer by trade, I had to figure out all the technical stuff myself, motion control included.

I now feel i can progress.  Monsoon Cambodia is doing ok on youtube, but I feel I can raise my level.  My latest project based at the salt fields of South East Asia, a stunning location, work is still in progress.  I hope it will showcase my work & capabilities, yet each project seems to stretch me in different ways.  The ultimate goal is to tell a story and to engage people  with the wonderful media.

Here I will showcase some of my work along with the occasional article regarding the technicals of what’s involved.  Commercial footage is available, please contact if theres footage you require.  A selection of short clips can also be found on timelapse_asia instagram account.

Mastering the Night: From the Iceland Aurora to Night Photography at Angkor temples!

October 26, 2025Darren WilchAstro Photogrsphy, Aurora borealis, Photography, time-lapseNo Comments

Iceland Photography Trip   Photographing the Aurora borealis had been a distant dream of mine.  Im located in Cambodia and certainly not getting a western wage. Northern countries are some distance and fairly pricey to visit. The aurora has a 11/12 year cycle, peaking around 2024-26.  I had a trip planned to the UK around…

Looping video and animation, pushing my photography over covid period.

November 1, 2022Darren Wilchtime-lapseNo Comments

Loopy Things A brief update on my time lapse related projects. Time lapse seems to be just one aspect of what I’ve been working on over the covid period. Add to the pool photogrammetry, deviance resolve, Blender and motion control rigs.  Grabbing a camera and getting immersed in photography is often a welcome relief to…

I have been doing time lapse photography since 2015, with a keen interest in motion control since starting. A bit of background on myself. I am a mechanical design engineer by trade. Previously I working on high speed product handling systems based in the UK. In 2010, after many years behind a 3D design terminal,…

April 23, 2020Darren Wilchtime-lapse

THIS POST NEEDS AN UPDATE.  THE SONY THING SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA.  AFTER TWO YEARS OF LOOKING INTO SONYS MENU, IM BACK ONTO CANON AND ENJOYING MY PHOTOGRAPHY AGAIN 🙂 For various reasons, I have migrated from Canon to Sony. Initially the change was with hesitation due to documented red flags on going mirrorless….

Time-lapse of plants, kit progress

March 6, 2019Darren Wilchtime-lapseNo Comments

Kit update Some projects I am working on require flower blossom time-lapse related to the local area, South East Asia. The idea dates back to before my work, Monsoon Cambodia, featuring water lilies opening in the final scene. Realising I needed a controlled environment, my first attempt was trailed in April 2018 with a water…

Long time-lapse, lessons learned

August 31, 2018Darren Wilchtime-lapseNo Comments

My quest to photograph the lifecycle of plant has come a step closer. The investment of a few bits and pieces to control the environment, mostly an Arduino micro controller and a grow lamp looks to be paying dividend. My interest in the pulsing lifecycle of the Tonle Sap and cyclic flood seasons of the…

BlackBox video stock platform, an oppinion.

August 24, 2018Darren Wilchtime-lapseNo Comments

Black Box one year in, I was introduced to blackbox.global one year ago. It seemed like a possible way to add passive income to my obsession of time-lapse photography. This keeps me busy and challenged during low season, my main work being Angkor photography tours. One year in, I can see things starting to work….

Water Lily timelapse – 2nd attempt

July 23, 2018Darren Wilchtime-lapseNo Comments

Blue Lotus Macro from Darren Wilch on Vimeo.   So here is my 2nd attempt, which worked much better than the first trial.  The main difference was blocking out the windows in bedroom, fast becoming studio.  This prevented the flicker you can see in the first trial. The other main change is the use of…

final cut lily from Darren Wilch on Vimeo. A bit about gear, moving from Canon to Sony for timelapse. I have been wanting to do a timelapse of the iconic red water lily’s opening for some time but with high season here in Siemreap, Angkor photography workshops have kept me busy. Now low season has…
